MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Jackson residents are lending support to police officers by giving meals to them.

Libby Murphy, organizer of the Blue Strong initiative in Jackson, says about 540 police officers are set to receive boxed meals Friday, in efforts to support law enforcement in the area.

On Friday afternoon, officers and community members are expected to meet at the Carl Perkins Civic Center to hear prayers delivered by pastors.

The efforts are in response to intense criticism of law enforcement after two unarmed men died during confrontations with police in Missouri and New York.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has agreed to investigate a fatal shooting involving a Jackson police officer in November. A suspect was fatally shot as investigators said he attacked and stabbed an officer.
