CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming Republican U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi has been formally elected chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.

Enzi was elected to the post Thursday after votes by the committee and the Republican Conference.

Enzi is the first accountant to hold the position.

As Budget Committee chairman, Enzi will work with his counterpart in the House in developing a fiscal budget blue print.

Enzi says in news release that the county’s national debt has grown to $18 trillion.

Enzi says he hopes to cut spending without inflicting massive cuts in every area of the government.

He wants to cut programs that duplicate others and were supposed to end decades ago.
