SCHENEVUS, N.Y. (AP) - A college student is being credited with saving members of an upstate New York family after spotting their house on fire in the middle of the night.

The Daily Star of Oneonta (oh-nee-AHN’-tuh) reports (https://bit.ly/17pKGVi ) that Shawn Sperbeck, a student at the University at Albany, was driving back to his home in the rural hamlet of Schenevus Thursday morning when he noticed a house in his hometown was on fire.

Sperbeck says he pounded on a door until one of the homeowners’ sons answered. The couple and their sons all got out safely before flames engulfed the back of the house, which was built in the early 19th century.

Dozens of firefighters battled the blaze in subzero temperatures that caused water lines to freeze.

The cause remains under investigation.
