ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) - A southern Utah man was found dead in a mine shaft where authorities say he had been searching for precious metals.

Washington County sheriff’s Sgt. David Crouse said Friday that authorities received a 911 call Thursday about an unresponsive man in Warner Valley.

He says 70-year-old Roy Dale Merrill, of Washington, Utah, was discovered about 100 feet down a mine shaft where he had been pumping out standing water. His family told authorities he had been looking for gold or silver.

Crouse says foul play is not suspected.

Detectives are working with the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.
