NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Sheriff’s officials say a Naples landlord who was convicted of killing a tenant during a confrontation over unpaid rent died in an apparent suicide a week before he was supposed to report to prison.

Collier County Sheriff’s investigators found 79-year-old Javier Ortoll slumped in his electronic wheelchair on Monday. The Naples Daily News (https://bit.ly/1Nwq7p3 ) reports medication bottles, scattered pills and a bottle of Havana Club Rum were at the table where he was seated.

Ortoll was convicted of second-degree murder on May 29 after jurors rejected his claims of self-defense. Authorities say Ortoll got into an argument with 51-year-old Edward Melone in October 2013. Melone had not paid his rent.

Collier County Judge Mike Carr allowed Ortoll to remain free on bond until his July 6 sentencing.
