RAYMOND, Maine (AP) - The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office says the death of a 52-year-old man whose body was burned after he fell into a backyard fire pit was an accident.

The Portland Press Herald reports ( ) Fire Marshal Joe Thomas said Tuesday investigators have determined that there was no evidence of a crime in the death of Timothy Small, of Raymond.

Investigators say Small was drinking with friends Friday night around his rock-lined fire pit. They say he was alone early Saturday when he fell into the fire.

His supervisor from work persuaded him to seek medical treatment, which he had initially refused.

Thomas says Small sustained second- and third-degree burns to 60 percent of his body.

He died Sunday evening at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
