HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The School of Human Performance and Recreation at the University of Southern Mississippi has a new name and a new director.

The school is formally being renamed the School of Kinesiology with Scott Piland as its leader.

The College Board previously approved the change.

Kinesiology focuses on the science of muscular movements.

Piland joined the USM faculty in 2004. His first assignment was to serve as clinical coordinator for the Athletic Training Program. Piland has also served in administrative roles as assistant director for faculty development and research promotion and assistant director for undergraduate studies.
