TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Police will use federal grant money to increase patrols in East Tampa and West Tampa to aid in the department’s fight against a surge in violence this year.

Officials made the announcement Tuesday after a violent weekend.

Following the murder of a 58-year-old woman who was shot while she was sleeping in her West Tampa home, police officials issued another plea for witnesses to come forward and made clear its frustration with a lack of cooperation in murder cases so far.

The Tampa Tribune (https://bit.ly/1Jv1uvd) reports Tampa police are investigating 21 murders so far this year, compared to the 12 that occurred during the first half of 2014.

The city has been scrambling to put a stop to the violence for months.
