AMITE, La. (AP) - Members of the Amite Town Council have voted to give themselves a raise.

The Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1HhItX6) the 4-1 vote Tuesday night means starting in August, council members will earn $700 a month for their work.

Currently, council members earn $400 a month for the regular meeting and can earn another $200 if they attend a special meeting.

The board had been discussing giving himself a raise and making their pay more consistent since June. At a prior meeting, the board voted 3-2 to raise their pay to $700 a month, however town attorneys said council members did not propose the raise as an ordinance.

The pay for the mayor was also moved to a consistent $1,200 a month instead of being paid by the meeting.
