GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) - A Granite City basketball squad that won an Illinois state title 75 years ago with a team of Eastern European immigrants is the subject of an upcoming Hollywood film.

Seven of 10 players on the 1940 Granite City High Warriors boys’ basketball team were sons of Armenian, Yugoslavian, Macedonian and Hungarian immigrants who worked in area steel mills.

The Belleville News-Democrat (bit.ly/1To30kk ) reports that “Men of Granite” will star Academy Award winners William Hurt and Shirley MacLaine.

The movie is based on a 2007 book of the same name by retired Milwaukee, Wisconsin sportswriter Dan Manoyan.

Most of the film will be shot Cleveland, Ohio, but the film’s director and crew recently visited southwestern Illinois to scout other possible filming locations.
