GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in Gastonia say an elderly homeless man has been taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after being beaten with a piece of cinder block.

Multiple media outlets report that police say 78-year-old Fletcher Harold Campbell was assaulted Monday.

Authorities say Campbell was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with severe injuries to his face.

Police say Campbell was later transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for facial surgery.

Police are asking for the public’s help in solving the case.
