PROCTOR, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s largest power company has completed renovations on a 110-year-old hydroelectric dam on the Otter Creek in Proctor.

Green Mountain Power bought the dam from the Vermont Marble Co. in 2011 and began work on improvements the following year. It replaced three of the facility’s five turbines and rebuilt another.

The refurbished dam now has 10 megawatts of capacity and is expected to double its annual power output from the previous 19-million kilowatt-hours per year to 38 million.

GMP CEO Mary Powell says Vermont hydro dams are the company’s cheapest source of electricity.
