PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Republican Party has chosen Peoria as the site of its 2016 state convention.

The Peoria County Republican Central Committee will be the local host of the event May 20-22, 2016. It will be at the Peoria Civic Center and Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette.

Party Chairman Tim Schneider said the River City was chosen from among proposals from various cities.

The state GOP hosts a convention every four years - about two months before the Republican National Convention - to choose presidential electors. Those chosen next spring will represent the Prairie State at the national fete in Cleveland July 18-21, 2016.

Besides Peoria, finalists were Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Collinsville and Springfield.
