BOULDER CREEK, Calif. (AP) - Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 17-year-old boy after they say he pointed a rifle at one of them during a rampage at his grandparents’ house.

Sheriff’s Lt. Kelly Kent says deputies responded to a 911 call from the grandparents on Thursday night reporting that the boy was destroying furniture and had beaten his grandfather at their home in rural Boulder Creek. When they arrived, they were told the boy had killed a family kitten.

Kent says deputies asked the boy to surrender, but he did not cooperate. He says the boy came out of the home with a rifle about a half hour after deputies arrived and pointed it at one of the deputies.

Two deputies opened fire, shooting the boy in the chest and hand. He later died at a hospital.

His identity was not released.
