RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia has awarded more than $2.2 million in hazard mitigation grants.

The state Department of Emergency Management announced the funding Thursday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The grants are for 14 properties in the communities of Chesapeake, Cleveland, Poquoson and Salem and one in Northumberland County.

Eleven homes will be removed and the land will be converted to open space. Four other homes will be raised to the base flood elevation level or higher.
