FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter crew rescued eight boaters who were stranded in the Everglades.

Sheriff’s spokesman Mike Jachles says three people, including an 11-year-old boy, were on an airboat that ran aground Saturday afternoon. They called family members for help.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel ( ) reports the second airboat reached the stranded boat around 9 p.m. Saturday with a supply of gas and some water and soda. The two boats trudged along for about 12 miles, looking for a way out. They eventually called another friend, asking him to bring extra gas.

Officials say the third boat launched around 11 p.m., but soon ran aground.

Around noon Sunday, a 911 call alerted officials. The boaters were found with the help of cell phones and GPS coordinates.
