OAK PARK, Mich. (AP) - A new FedEx Ground distribution center is being built on the former site of the Detroit Artillery Armory in Oak Park.

The Detroit Free Press (https://on.freep.com/1M0UkhL ) reports construction has started on the new 300,000-square-foot FedEx center. Oak Park City Manager Erik Tungate says the facility is expected to have 245 employees when it opens next year, and that as many as 400 people could work there within five years.

FedEx spokesman David Westrick says most workers at the new distribution center would come from existing facilities, though none that are currently open will close. There are distribution centers in Ann Arbor, Livonia and Pontiac.

The armory and surrounding structures were torn down a decade ago. The state began using the site in the 1940s.
