CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A nonprofit group wants to shine green lights on the Ravenel Bridge linking Charleston and Mount Pleasant next St. Patrick’s Day.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (https://bit.ly/1gwZAhf ) the group Go Green March 17 has asked the state transportation department for permission to shine green lights on the bridge towers for a week in March.

College of Charleston English professor Joe Kelly says lighting the bridge would express pride in the Lowcountry’s Irish heritage.

The transportation department says the organizers must first get permission from Mount Pleasant and Charleston. Mount Pleasant Town Council is expected to decide Tuesday.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley Jr,, who is Irish, says the city is considering the idea and lighting the bridge could be a fun thing to do.
