CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - A Virginia State Bar panel will hear a complaint against a former Culpeper County prosecutor in August.

The Culpeper Star-Exponent (https://bit.ly/1D8SZy4 ) reports that Richmond attorney David Preston Baugh filed the complaint against former commonwealth’s attorney Gary Close. The complaint alleges that Close made misleading and erroneous statements to the jury during Michael Hash’s trial. The statements were regarding a jailhouse informant who testified that Hash confessed to the 1996 murder of 74-year-old Thelma D. Scroggins.

Hash was convicted of capital murder in 2001. He served 12 years of a life sentence before a federal judge overturned his conviction in February 2012.

Close has said he did nothing wrong in the case.

A State Bar three-judge panel will hear the complaint against Close Aug. 6-7 in Albemarle Circuit Court.
