CREIGHTON, Pa. (AP) - Police say an impatient hitchhiker tried to hop a train instead and wound up in the hospital for his trouble.

East Deer police have identified the man only as Mark Butzin, of Tarentum.

Police say Butzin was walking along a road in East Deer, a neighboring township, trying to hitch a ride. When that didn’t pan out, he tried to hop a passing freight train just before 7 a.m. Monday and was, instead, hit by the train and thrown down on some gravel along the tracks which parallel the road where he’d been hitchhiking.

Township fire chief Jack Bailie says the train’s operators didn’t realize what happened and didn’t stop until they got to Tarentum, where authorities advised them what happened.

Police Chief John Manchini says Butzin was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
