REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Defense lawyers say a Detroit-area woman accused of giving birth at work and hiding the boy in a plastic bag at her desk has been found mentally competent.

The Detroit News reports (https://bit.ly/1eWt0nW ) results of the evaluation were revealed Monday during a hearing for Kimberly Pappas of Wyandotte, who faces murder and child abuse charges.

Judge Karen Khalil of 17th District Court declined to rule on Pappas’ competency until results of a portion of the exam addressing criminal responsibility is complete.

An Aug. 24 hearing is to determine if the case goes to trial. Her lawyers have sought mental health treatment for her.

Police say the baby was discovered on March 31, shortly after the birth in the restroom of a Redford Township business. The cause of death was suffocation.
