PLANTATION, Fla. (AP) - Police say an officer fatally shot a man who punched him in the face during a confrontation in South Florida.

Plantation Police Detective Philip Toman says Officer Erik Carlton was on a foot patrol when he spotted the man behind an office building and asked him to move along. Toman says the man assaulted Carlton, who used a stun gun on him. Toman says the man continued to become more aggressive and Carlton shot him.

Police say the man died after surgery. His name was not released, but Toman says he had an extensive arrest record including “acts of violence towards law enforcement officers,” and there was an active warrant for him.

Carlton had minor injuries. Toman says Carlton has worked for the police department since 2001.
