“The Long Walk’: Opera based on Iraq veteran’s book premieres on upstate New York stage

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - An opera based on a western New York veteran’s experiences as a bomb disposal expert in Iraq got its world premiere last week at an upstate theater.

“The Long Walk” hit the stage Friday night at the Little Theatre at Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs.

The new opera is based on a 2012 non-fiction book of the same name written by Brian Castner of the Buffalo area. Castner is an Air Force veteran who served in a unit that defused roadside bombs.

His war memoir described his harrowing experiences and difficulties he faced readjusting to civilian life.

The opera by composer Jeremy Howard Beck and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann is being produced by Opera Saratoga from a work commissioned by the New York City-based American Lyric Theater. Other performances were scheduled for July 13, 17 and 25.
