SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police are investigating an apparent suicide at the Utah State Prison.

Authorities said Monday that 27-year-old Joshua S. Ama was found in his cell about 9 p.m. Sunday. He was housed alone.

Ama was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Prison officials say the death is under investigation, but a preliminary review shows officers followed proper procedures.

Unified Police officers of Salt Lake County are investigating the incident, as is standard protocol.

Ama was sent to the prison in April 2013 after being convicted of assault, disarming a peace officer and assault by a prisoner. He was scheduled to have a parole hearing next spring.
