WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - A Dartmouth College medical school professor has been named executive director of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Vermont.

Paula Schnurr is a research professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. The executive division of the national PTSD center is located at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont, and many of its leaders serve as senior faculty at Dartmouth.

Approximately 800,000 adult Americans experience PTSD each year, and more than 531,000 veterans sought treatment for it last year. The center’s goal is to improve the clinical care and social welfare of veterans and others who have experienced PTSD and trauma.

Schnurr has served as the center’s acting director since 2013.
