BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Burlington City Council has approved a New York Police Department veteran to be the city’s new police chief.

The council voted 11-0 Monday night to confirm the mayor’s nominee of Brandon del Pozo despite concerns brought up about his previous writings on racial profiling and his career with the NYPD.

Del Pozo said, “Race in American is an extremely difficult thing to talk about. Race in policing was always a difficult thing to talk about. From 2001 at least onward, I talked about it.”

Mayor Miro Weinberger says del Pozo has the experience, education and perspective to strengthen the department and its ties to the community and to lead the city’s efforts to address new and growing public safety challenges.

Del Pozo becomes chief in September.
