PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a man trying to elude capture drove onto a city sidewalk in Paterson and struck two mailboxes and a payphone.

Passaic County authorities say detectives were conducting surveillance Monday afternoon when they saw 45-year-old Ralph Polito engage in an apparent drug deal. They tried to stop his car, but he drove off when the detectives approached the vehicle on foot.

A chase ensued for several blocks, but the detectives ended their pursuit when Polito drove onto the sidewalk. He then hit the mailboxes, and the vehicle became disabled when he crashed into a payphone and metal piping.

Polito allegedly ran off after the crash and fought with officers before he was subdued. He suffered undisclosed minor injuries.

Polito was charged with drug possession, eluding and resisting arrest.
