GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - Two people are in custody following the wounding of a retired suburban New York police officer who interrupted a burglary at a neighbor’s home.

Greenburgh police say the retired officer, Peter Schmidt Sr., remained hospitalized in stable condition on Tuesday morning.

He confronted two men around 4 p.m. Monday. Police say one of the suspects fired two shots, hitting Schmidt in the arm and torso.

The retiree’s son, a Greenburgh police officer who was off-duty, ran to the scene. He saw a car leaving and called in the license plate number.

The two suspects were apprehended in Yonkers.

Schmidt retired from the Greenburgh police force in 2005 after two decades of service.
