BARRE, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s Department of Fish & Wildlife will be picking the winners in this year’s moose permit lottery this week.

At the event set for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Barre Fish & Game Club, officials will be drawing the 225 winners of a chance to hunt moose during this fall’s moose hunting season.

June 17 was the deadline for entering the lottery.

The permits include five set aside for military veterans of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 40 for hunting during archery season.

Vermont has an estimated 2,400 moose, with the largest concentration in the northeastern part of the state.
