DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) - A 34-year-old Polish immigrant accused in an animal cruelty case that drew wide attention two years ago is on trial on related charges he stole $130,000 from an elderly woman he was caring for.

The Patriot Ledger of Quincy reports (https://bit.ly/1Gk7Nu3) that the attorney for Radoslaw Czerkawski (RAD’-oh-slaw zehr-KAW’-skee) said in trial openings Tuesday the woman wanted his client to have her money.

A prosecutor said Czerkawski scammed the money in the months before 95-year-old Janina Stock died in 2013 by telling a bank he was her grandson.

Czerkawski has pleaded not guilty to larceny. He separately denies charges he tortured a year-old pit bull which had to be euthanized.

The dog, nicknamed “Puppy Doe” by police, was found abandoned near Stock’s home the day she died of natural causes. .
