SANFORD, N.C. (AP) - Firefighters in Sanford say they found the bodies of a woman and her daughter in a burning apartment.

The fire was reported about 1:30 p.m. Monday by a neighbor who reported a strong odor of gasoline.

Battalion Chief Scott Knuth told local media that the apartment suffered smoke and minor fire damage.

Knuth said the bodies were found while the fire was being extinguished.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the cause of the fire and the deaths.
