SAN DIEGO (AP) - A man who allegedly beat an elephant seal pup to death under a bridge near the Port of San Diego has pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty.

Roy Lee Miller entered the plea Tuesday to a felony charge of cruelty to an endangered or protected animal.

Prosecutors say he repeatedly hit the pup in the head with a rock earlier this year. Authorities haven’t released a motive for the killing.

Miller remains jailed Wednesday. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
