NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - L+M Healthcare and Yale New Haven Health System say they’ve agreed to affiliate, joining the larger New Haven institution with the parent organization of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Westerly Hospital, a medical group and Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut.

The agreement, which was announced Wednesday, requires approval from Connecticut and Rhode Island regulators.

The two health care organizations say an affiliation will improve health care quality, access and efficiency.

Yale New Haven Health System will spend $300 million in Connecticut and Rhode Island for primary care, OB/maternity services, orthopedics, neurosurgery and other specialties.

L+M President and CEO Bruce Cummings told staff in June the board of directors responded to financial pressures. He cited the state budget passed in June increasing taxes on hospital revenue and reducing Medicaid reimbursements
