WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - A McMechen contractor has been sentenced for underreporting his employees’ compensation and staging a vehicle accident.

Stephen J. Gretchen was sentenced to a year and a day in prison on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Wheeling. The 45-year-old roofing and general contractor had pleaded guilty to tax and mail fraud charges in January.

U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II says Gretchen paid about $22,880 to employees in the second quarter of 2011. But he reported on a federal tax return that he didn’t pay any compensation to employees.

Ihlenfeld says in a news release that Gretchen also paid an employee to crash a dump truck into a camping trailer that he owned. Gretchen falsely reported on an insurance claim that the camping trailer was damaged by a hit-and-run accident.
