SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - The city of Springfield has filed a lawsuit in an effort to force Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott to once again accept municipal inmates into the county jail.

The suit claims Arnott is not complying with an intergovernmental agreement signed in July 1997. The Springfield News Leader reports (https://sgfnow.co/1I1CI3K ) the suit filed Tuesday by City Attorney Dan Wichmer and Assistant City Attorney Thomas Rykowski names Arnott and three Greene County commissioners as defendants. The suit asks the court to order that housing be provided for all municipal inmates without charge.

Arnott cited a lack of space when he announced a new policy on April 3 that the jail would turn away municipal inmates. The ban has been periodically lifted for short periods, starting on July 6.
