URBANA, Ohio (AP) - A western Ohio woman who authorities say faked brain cancer and accepted donations to help with expenses has been sentenced to a year in prison.

Officials say 34-year-old Heather Gaus was sentenced Wednesday in Champaign County Common Pleas Court and ordered to repay over $3,000 to more than 30 victims. The Urbana woman pleaded guilty last month to one count of theft.

Gaus’ attorney didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.

Court documents say community members, online donors and a local Fraternal Order of the Eagles chapter raised money in 2013 for Gaus after she said she had brain cancer.

The judge’s sentencing order says the maximum sentence was imposed because of the length and breadth of the deception and its psychological effect on Gaus’ four children.
