WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. (AP) - Two New York state troopers and a good Samaritan are being credited with saving the life of a teenager who was caught in a dam’s intake tunnel while swimming in an upstate lake.

State police say they got a call around 8 p.m. Wednesday about someone in the water at Whitney Point Lake, 15 miles north of Binghamton.

Trooper Donald Atkinson heard a girl calling for help inside the dam at the lake’s southern end. Atkins entered the water and found the 14-year-old was unable to swim out of the intake tunnel because of the strong current.

Police say a bystander and Trooper Lawrence Gurdo assisted Atkinson as he tossed a rope to the girl, then all three pulled her to safety.

The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment.
