CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus was voted the Big South Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

The league announced the honor Thursday. Backus came out on top in a vote of league athletic directors, senior woman administrators and sports information directors. He finished ahead of his teammate, quarterback Alex Ross, in the voting.

Backus led the Big South with 127 tackles last fall, becoming the first in league history to top that category three times. He finished fourth in the Football Championship Subdivision with six forced fumbles and helped the Chanticleers to a 12-2 mark and a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA playoffs.

Longwood softball catcher Megan Baltzell was named the league’s female athlete of the year.
