PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a former Boy Scout leader facing more than 20 felony sex-crime allegations dating back to the early 1980s has died in a Phoenix jail.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials say 67-year-old William John Challberg died of natural causes in the Lower Buckeye Jail on June 24.

The Arizona Republic reports that a county Superior Court judge was set to rule on Challberg’s mental competency in a Thursday hearing.

Challberg and a co-defendant were accused of inappropriately touching boys from ages 9 to 16 between 1983 and 2003 at their Phoenix home.

Challberg and co-defendant Julian Mendoza were arrested by Phoenix police in June 2014 on child abuse allegations.

Prosecutors say the 52-year-old Mendoza still is scheduled to stand trial next month.
