LYNN, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts State Police have filed a criminal charge against a man who was seriously injured July 4 when fireworks exploded in his hand.

Troopers lodged a criminal complaint Thursday in Lynn District Court against 23-year-old Joseph Carozza of Saugus, who remains hospitalized. He will be summoned to court Aug. 24 to face a fireworks possession charge.

Police say Carozza suffered burns and hand injuries when fireworks exploded in his left hand in the backyard of his home in Saugus. Authorities say the state police bomb squad also disposed of several unexploded, commercial-grade fireworks found in Carozza’s bedroom.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan says there was evidence that alcohol played a role in the accident.

Carozza’s response to the criminal charge isn’t known. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
