RIVERSIDE, California (AP) - Sheriff’s officials say a Riverside jail inmate has died after telling staff he had swallowed an ounce of methamphetamine prior to his arrest.

The Press-Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1Go2MAB ) the inmate died Tuesday about an hour and a half after the medical emergency was discovered at Robert Presley Detention Center.

Sheriff’s and coroner’s officials hadn’t released the man’s name or the reason for his arrest as of Wednesday.

In a written statement, Chief Deputy Geoff Raya said the inmate was arrested around 4 p.m. in Riverside Tuesday. He died about six hours later.
