NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Norfolk officials say ground will be broken on a major downtown redevelopment project in August.

The city said Thursday a groundbreaking ceremony will be held for Waterside Live! on Aug. 26.

The Waterside Festival Marketplace, which the new venue will replace, sits on the banks of the Elizabeth River and has struggled to maintain tenants for years. It is now slated for a major overhaul by the Cordish Companies, which plans to open up the building to the water and bring in restaurants and live entertainment to make it a regional destination. The company has overseen other major downtown development projects in Baltimore, Kansas City and St. Louis.

The city says the new Waterside is on schedule to open in the spring of 2017.
