DEPOSIT, N.Y. (AP) - New York City officials have increased releases of water from one of their upstate reservoirs as they repair a nearby leak.

Workers discovered discharges from a rock embankment below the Cannonsville Dam on the western edge of the Catskills as they drilled boring holes for a hydroelectric plant earlier this month.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the workers’ drilling released ground water dozens of feet below surface level.

The city’s Department of Environmental Protection says it is prudent to lower Cannonsville Reservoir levels while repairs are made. They said there is no imminent threat to the 51-year-old dam.
