EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Eugene police say a murder-suicide last Saturday likely stemmed from an argument that happened a day earlier.

Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin says 54-year-old George Santos died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fatally shooting his roommate, 52-year-old Heidi Christine Rice. Before killing himself, Santos used an accelerant to set the house on the fire.

Investigators said that on the Friday afternoon before the shootings Santos was arrested on harassment charges after pushing Rice during an argument. The dispute began when Santos asked Rice’s friends and relatives to leave the house and they stayed.

Santos was released from jail Friday at 10:30 p.m. after posting bail. Eugene police responded four hours later to the report of a house fire and gunshots.

McLaughlin said Santos and Rice were just roommates and not in a romantic relationship.
