LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say police managed to pry open window security bars and rescue a man and a woman who were critically injured in a fire that gutted a Long Beach apartment complex.

Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin says an officer manning a nearby roadblock learned of the fire around 2 a.m. Thursday and rushed to the building via an alley.

He found the victims trapped in the bedroom of a burning unit. After prying open the security bars, the officer helped the man out through the window. Two other officers pulled the woman out.

City News Service reports the two victims are hospitalized in critical condition.

At least 26 residents were displaced by the fire. The cause is under investigation.

The building is one of dozens that lost electricity Wednesday during a widespread power outage.
