ST. LOUIS (AP) - A 23-year-old man who police believe ambushed and opened fire on a uniformed police sergeant is in custody and charged with four felonies in the shooting.

Prosecutors charged Dale Wolford with assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of shooting a firearm from a motor vehicle. He’s been ordered jailed on $200,000 bond, and it’s unclear if he has an attorney.

Wolford is the third suspect arrested in connection with the pre-dawn shooting Tuesday of the officer as he sat in his private car. The officer was treated at a hospital.

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged the suspected getaway driver with felony assault and armed criminal action.

An 18-year-old suspect also is in custody but hadn’t been charged as of mid-day Thursday.
