HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - The latest on a Texas inmate who was scheduled to be executed Thursday for the killing of a 93-year-old woman (all times CDT):

Texas’ highest criminal court has put off the execution of a death row inmate, hours before he was set to die for the slaying of a 93-year-old woman at her home during a robbery a decade ago.

The Texas Court of Criminal of Appeals halted the scheduled lethal injection of 31-year-old Clifton Lamar Williams. In a brief order, the court agreed with Williams’ attorneys, who asked for the delay to examine whether incorrect FBI statistics regarding DNA probabilities in population estimates cited by witnesses testifying at his 2006 capital murder trial could have affected the outcome of Williams’ trial.

Williams had been set for execution Thursday for the killing of Cecelia Schneider of Tyler. Investigators determined she was beaten and stabbed before her body and her bed were set on fire.

A Texas inmate set to be executed for the slaying of a 93-year-old woman during a robbery a decade ago is seeking a delay.

An appeal filed late Wednesday in state court contends that the scheduled execution of Clifton Lamar Williams on Thursday evening should be delayed. It cites an error in an FBI database used by two witnesses testifying at Williams’ trial in 2006.

Williams was convicted of for killing Cecelia Schneider at her home in Tyler.

Prosecutors argue that revised statistics from the database used to calculate population odds and DNA probabilities don’t affect the overwhelming evidence of Williams’ guilt.

The 31-year-old Williams would be the 10th inmate to receive a lethal injection this year in Texas, which carries out the death penalty more than any other state.
