MARRERO, La. (AP) - An Alexandria murder suspect who escaped from a women’s prison in Avoyelles Parish has been captured in south Louisiana.

The Alexandria Daily Town Talk (https://townta.lk/1gFj6YX ) reports that 24-year-old Melissa Hayes was captured Wednesday in Marrero by members of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force, four days after she escaped the women’s prison in Cottonport.

Hayes faces a murder charge in connection with a February double homicide at an apartment in Alexandria.

To escape, the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office says Hayes broke through a lock at the prison Saturday and then climbed over a razor-wire fence.

Authorities say Hayes bleached her hair blond while she was on the run.

Hayes has since been taken back to Avoyelles Parish, where she will face a charge of simple escape.
