MT. VERNON, Ga. (AP) - Prosecutors in middle Georgia say they’ve asked the GBI to investigate the reported burglary of a sheriff’s personal office hours after he died in a crash during a pursuit.

District Attorney Tim Vaughn tells WMAZ-TV (https://on.wmaz.com/1e58Oze ) that files and a safe were stolen June 16 from the office of former Montgomery County Sheriff Ladson O’Connor hours after he died in a crash during a pursuit.

Vaughn says the theft was reported by a tipster. He says files were found at an employee’s home and the safe had been removed from the building and returned.

Special Agent In Charge Eve Rodgers of the GBI’s Eastman office says authorities have questioned several employees of the sheriff’s department and the City of Montgomery. Rodgers says the GBI is also reviewing surveillance footage.
