ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The District Attorney’s Office has dropped charges against a man who a 75-year-old woman told police had raped and severely beat her.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1fPDdDy ) that a dismissal was filed in the case against 57-year-old Ernest Casias on July 9. The filing states that an investigation is ongoing.

The woman had been found unresponsive on the floor in her home in March. She was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where doctors found skull fractures, a broken nose, fractured neck and multiple bruises.

Casias, who had worked as a handyman in the woman’s home, was identified by the woman in a photo array. A sample of DNA also potentially linked him to the case.

Charges in the case may be brought later.
